JC's Review ~ Sketch by Laramie Briscoe

SketchSketch by Laramie Briscoe
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've read a couple of Laramie's other books, and enjoyed them, but this book blew them out of the water! Sketch is amazing!!

I loved that Sketch was told mostly from the male POV, there are a few snippets from his wife, Nina's POV, but majority of the book is from Devin (Sketch). The storyline isn't something I was expecting from this author, but I'm so glad she stepped out of her comfort zone and wrote this book! Everything about it was great, from the character development to the intriguing storyline, to the emotions you feel as a reader.

This isn't your typical romance story, there isn't an obscene amount of unnecessary drama. It tells the story of a lot of real life relationships. Sketch is focused on his career and making a life for him and his wife. His wife Nina, doesn't see his working so much in the same light, she only wants Sketch to spend more time with her.

This story follows the two of the separating and not only growing apart, but realizing how much they love each other in their separation. The thought processes and struggles they go through are very realistic. I found myself placing myself in Sketch and Nina's situations, trying to figure out how I would react in them.

That to me is what made this book five stars, Laramie Briscoe was able to develop these characters and their situation so well that it's really life-like. It make me think of how I would face the struggles they went through. I felt every emotion for them throughout reading it.

While I've enjoyed her other works, Sketch is by far the best book I've read from Laramie. Nothing short of fantastic.

Diane's Review ~ Scarless & Sacred by Bethany-Kris

Scarless & Sacred (The Chicago War, #3)Scarless & Sacred by Bethany-Kris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“The Outfit is full of scars and secrets…”

Could there be even more twists and turns and emotional wrenches in the third installment of this series? Considering the previous books were chock-full of them it’s hard to imagine, but true! This is not a stand-alone so you will want to read the first deliciously tense books in this series first before tackling this emotional story focused on Evelina Conti and Theo DeLuca this time around.

“Babe, I’m a terribly careful man. It’s my job to be careful. Otherwise, I’d be dead.”

Family is everything so when you are called to do your duty, you do it. What happens when duty flies against your instincts and the people you love? Eve and Theo’s families belong to the Outfit but there is no peace between them. Much has gone on, blood has been spilled, and yet the game continues more deadly than ever. Theo’s life has not been easy and his past governs and haunts everything he does. Regret and anger vies with loyalty and he struggles to do the right thing. Eve is his constant but even she can’t fight his demons. Eve knows what it is important and despite danger and tight family ties fights with him.

>“I would rather love a man entirely. Hidden monsters, scars, secrets and all. .. I don’t want a piece of some man’s heart. I want his whole heart, even if that means holding the pieces of it together.”

The revelations and twists to this story never stop! This is not a gentle story but an in your face, balls to the wall, nail-biter! Gritty, violent and filled with rage, those moments are intertwined with tender glimpses of personal discovery and sacrifice. Eve and Theo seem to encapsulate so much of the struggle that goes on. Theo is good at what he does, but what he does is not good. To toe the line, Eve must hurt those she loves. To live your life, each moment, with that kind of struggle and tension, well, medication would surely be required! This series is all about people – the good and the bad – and this installment seemed to really dig into the heart of what it means to be part of this ‘family’. Emotional and gut-wrenching, I don’t know if my heart can take another book in this series… but I can’t wait to find out!

Diane's Review ~ Reckless & Ruined by Bethany-Kris

Reckless & Ruined (The Chicago War, #2)Reckless & Ruined by Bethany-Kris

When love has no place….

If you haven’t read the first book in this series, stop and go do that! Each installment builds on the last and, believe me, there is a lot going on in this intense series. A LOT! You can’t miss a page or a paragraph because otherwise you will get lost quickly. Like the best, soapiest of operas, the story unfolds with surprising twists around every corner.

This series is all about the Chicago Outfit and the conflict that has erupted between, and amongst, the various crime families that belong to it. It’s all about the ‘family’ yet people are used as pawns when revenge and ambition are in play. I picture a chess board where people are moved and manipulated as part of a grant scheme or goal. Clear for the people in charge but those chess pieces have no idea what’s coming when rules are thrown out window.

“… being the son of Riley Conti meant Adriano had to follow the god**n rules.”

Alessa Trentini and Adriano Conti know all about the rules that govern their actions. Every step is watched, measured and judged. Each family member has a purpose and when you are called to do your duty you do not question it. That is the family way. When Alessa is called to marry the only man on earth she refused to have she can’t help but spend as much time as she can with Adriano. He has protected her since they were children and while they don’t speak of love, the physical attraction and care between them has only grown stronger.

“I’m not looking for a good man.”
“Just yours, huh?”
“Just mine…”

There is a lot of Romeo and Juliet in this series and this story is no exception. There are few reasons for Alessa and Adriano to be together but so many why they can’t. Families are at war behind the fa├žade of business as usual and loyalties and allegiances are questioned at every turn. Despite that, Alessa and Adriano have to fight for what they have, one of the few things they each can rely on and know to be true. It’s a dangerous game they play and the knots in my stomach prove how tense their situation is… Another taut, intense installment where each page brings something new to the game. Stellar!

Where family is not always safe…

This story is the first in a series about the Chicago Outfit. The Mob. Mafia. Those words alone conjure up so many images of movies that depict what this world may actually be like. This glimpse is another very personal peek into ‘family’ life and all its complicated simplicity… Hold onto your hats… it’s going to get very bumpy indeed!

Lily DeLuca had thought she escaped the bonds she was born into but it seems she only delayed the inevitable. Damian Rossi was to be her husband, the man she pledges her life to. If only she could trust him…

I’m still trying to catch my breath and update my scorecard because this book was a whirlwind of shocking events, criminal intrigue and high emotion. Lily is young but she’s had to grow up fast in a world where mistakes are met with deadly consequences. Considering the life she has led, she still seemed surprised she was drawn back into a world she wanted no part of. She was getting married to a man she did not know. Or did she? Damian had been on the periphery of much of her life and their circumstances were not that different. As the two spent more time together the differences seemed to fade as they found common ground. Lily seemed a bit easier to read as Damian certainly lived up to his “Ghost” reputation though even he had his moments.

“He decided in that moment, right then and f**king there, Lily DeLuca was his and she was d**n well going to know it, too.”

They were two very complex characters, in a crowd of many, living very complicated lives. I wouldn’t say they gave me the warm and fuzzies, they held themselves aloof from so many and I include myself in that group. They certainly were able to open up to each other though and that gave me the opportunity to feel some of the many conflicting emotions they both were going through. To call their story entertaining would be true though uncomfortably entertaining would be closer to the mark. Fast-paced and twisted, an explosive start to a series I can’t wait to read more of.

Diane's Review ~ Blindsided by T.C. Matson

Blindsided (The Fighter Series #1)Blindsided by T.C. Matson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When you take a breath and take a chance…

From the start I knew this was going to be an ‘uphill battle’ romance. Not the story itself – the story was funny and sexy with engaging characters – but the actual romance itself. Paige had been hurt before and wasn’t interested in being lied to again. She was beautiful so was used to being hit at the restaurant or when she was bartending. That didn’t mean she fell for every (or any) line that she was fed. Levi was gorgeous but he also seemed to be another player with his practiced patter. She’d heard it all before….

What was unusual though was Levi’s persistence and Paige’s lowered resistance to him. Paige was honest with herself and him – she wasn’t looking for a one-night stand and temporary fling. Levi was honest about his past and his intent to remain unattached. Easy, right? They each go their separate ways, no harm done. Oh, but that would make for a boring plotline, wouldn’t it? And this was definitely not boring.

Levi kept coming back for more even when he was shot down. Repeatedly.

“When I think of Paige, the man stands up and since we text almost every day, I’m a walking woody.”

I admit to smiling more than once over their text messages. Ahh, modern courtship – so sweet!

“He feels good beside me. I feel safe, completed and oddly… cherished.”

While Paige’s preoccupation with the past did seem a bit overdone, the progression of their relationship was spiced up with past lovers and their own insecurities providing twists and conflict that moved the story quickly along. A bit of an abrupt ending – I didn’t realize this was the first in a continuing story – has me eager to find out where these two are headed.
