Jess's Review ~ Pawn by T.M. Frazier

Pawn (The Pawn Duet, #2)
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book two in the Pawn Duet. I have to start by saying that I did like this book. I was eager to see what was going to come of Mickey and her crazy vanishing act. There were many pieces that needed to be worked out and revenge to be had. The Fourth Reich was the biggest problem and I needed to know how those pieces would all fall into place. Mickey is a different sort of character, ridiculous smart but still damaged. Her grief is clear and her mind is broken but her one constant, the one thing that can ground her is Pike.

I love Logan Beach. I love the crazy characters, I love how they are unique and bring this totally different level of enjoyment to all of the books that surround this town. Each one holds a special place in my book heart and Pike has been no different. While a little slow on the up-take and a bit blind to things that are obvious to the rest of us. He is loyal and fierce. He makes no excuses for the things that he does and I can't help but love him. He is a great addition to the original crew and I love how we get to see the other players in these books.

All that being said, this book felt different and I think given the center plot and story that it had to be different given the times we find ourselves in. Ms. Frazier did the subject matter justice when I know it must have been a struggle to get through. Hate is a powerful thing, even in fiction. This book didn't have quite the grit that the others have had. And while the storyline does pick up where book one left us, it still had a different feel. There were still unique twists and unexpected turn of events. There was even this one time I had to go back because I definitely didn't see what I thought I saw. I did miss that "thing" that her other stories have had though. I can't even explain what the "thing" is really, it just is, and this book didn't have it to the same level. I do look forward to going back to Logan Beach in the future and am excited to see what role these two bring later on.
