Erin's Review ~ A Ballad of Confetti, Cake and Catastrophes by Helen Juliet

A Ballad of Confetti, Cake and CatastrophesA Ballad of Confetti, Cake and Catastrophes by Helen Juliet
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Nicholas had one job to do for his sister's wedding, hire the harpist, and of course he forgot! With a week until the big day he finds a street performer whose guitar playing and voice move him. Out of options, he asks Fynn to play and the two spend the next week preparing for the ceremony and getting to know one another. As time goes on the two grow closer and Nicholas finds out quite a bit about himself.
This was a sweet love story packed into a mess of catastrophes. One thing after another is going wrong but amidst all the hullabaloo we get to see Nicholas and Fynn opening up to one another and creating a relationship. Both of these character were endearing. Nicholas was insecure and unsure of his sexuality. He always thought something was wrong with him since he didn't get excited over the girls at school. Meeting Fynn helped him to gain a clearer understanding of who he is. It was interesting and a bit emotional to witness. Fynn was confident and cool. There was just something about him that was intriguing. He paired so well with Nicholas. He was extremely patient and understanding of him and I enjoyed their dynamic.
I felt that the pace was slow until about fifty percent of the way through the book and then things started to move more quickly. It was cute to see the beginning stages of the relationship. Nicholas being unsure and questioning himself and Fynn, as well as the build of the relationship, it kept me reading even when the rest of the storyline at that point wasn't as captivating. The sex scenes were more tender than steamy but totally fit the feel of the story and we're still sexy. The characters and Nicholas' personal journey grabbed ahold of me and had me eager to find out how everything would turn out.
This was my first book by Helen Juliet, I very enjoyed it and will definitely check out more from her.
